Kendall's & Shelley's Central America Trip

Day 11 - Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica to Bocus del Toro, Panama

September 13, 2007

Today we traveled from Puerto Viejo to across the Panama boarder to Bastimentos. We picked up the bus in Puerto Viejo to Sixaola. This bus takes you right to the boarder, but we had to walk a few blocks and up a hill to the end of a huge metal bridge that has old train tracks on it. We got our passport exit stamps from Costa Rica then walked across the bridge to Panama. We had to pay $10 to get into Panama and to get our entrance stamps. We were approached by three girls from Spain and asked if we want to share a taxi to Bocas del Toro to make the trip cheaper. We had seen them around Puerto Viejo and they seemed nice, another bonus is that they speak Spanish! We shared a taxi with them from Guabito to Changuinola. Then took a boat from Changuinola down a canal to Bocus del Toro. Next we took a different boat to Bastimentos Island. Bastimentos is the only island in the world that the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog lives on. We hope to find one tomorrow. We found a hotel right on the water. We ate lunch on hammocks on the dock looking out on the canal. Some tiny geckos found our jelly knife and started licking the jelly off the knife. It was funny to watch their little tongues move so quickly.

Bocas del Toro is a small island group off of the north west coast of Panama. If you have Google Earth you can enter: 9°20'47.57"N, 82°12'25.16"W and that's where we are. It was the home of the first Survivor TV show and a beautiful place. We thought Costa Rica was cheap but this is even cheaper.
