Kendall's & Shelley's Asia Trip

Day 5 - Big La Laguna to Sabang on Mindoro Island, Philippines

August 28, 2006

Our day began with blue skies so I could finally take some good photographs of the islands. I went down to the beach and told the banca drivers I only had 200 pesos and asked which one could take me out the longest. One guy said an hour and I hopped in his boat. I got some great photos then went back to the hotel room. Shelley wasn't feeling too great so I went jumped on a boat for the 9:00 dive to The Canyons. This was the most technical dive I have ever done (also one of the most fun). We went down 100 feet and the current was absolutely amazing. The dive consisted of having the current pull you over a deep reef and then jumping down into canyons and grabbing on to something to keep from being swept away. When we would exhale the bubbles would not rise, they would simply travel sideways in the current. We saw lots of huge groupers, snappers, and other large fish. To end the dive we had to do an open water ascent from 100 feet with a safety stop in the middle. When I got back we decided to head into Puerto Galera. We hopped on a Jeepney and took it into town. A drunken old German man was also on our Jeepney and he gave us lots of great advice for things to do in town. He guided us to a small German restaurant which bakes fantastic bread. After lunch we went out to take photos and I realized there was no battery in my camera. We took a motor bike back into town and hung out in our air conditioned room for a while before heading out for dinner.
