Day 14 - Patong Beach Phuket to Phi Phi Islands, Krabi, Thailand

September 6, 2006

Today we decided to move to the Koh Phi Phi Islands for our last few days in Southern Thailand. After lunch we booked a taxi to the sea port and then a ferry to the Phi Phi Islands. It took us nearly all day to get there but we easily found a room on Ko Phi-Phi Don on the Koh Nai section of the Island. The island is shaped somewhat like an hour glass with narrow section 1000 feet wide housing most of the town. On either side of this section is a beautiful white sand beach surrounded by limestone cliffs covered with tropical jungle plants. Because of this topography, the entire town was leveled by the tsunami. It terms of loss of life and property, Ko Phi-Phi Don was 2nd worst hit area. It seems to be about 80% rebuilt already, and already too overbuilt. This is easily one of the most beautiful places in the world (the movie The Beach was filmed here) and within a 2 or 3 years it will be overdeveloped with resorts covering the beaches from wall to wall. For now, it is still a pretty cool place. After we unpacked we booked two dives for tomorrow ate dinner and went to bed. The food here is fantastic and usually about $1.30 a plate.

In the center of these cliffs is a perfect beach. The water temperature is about 85º and crystal clear.

A closer view (this is the same place we took the snorkel cruise to a few days ago).
