About Awesome Animals
The Awesome Animal Summer program is a week long session of hands-on
classes where children learn about the animals of the world. Through
activities, demonstrations, and of course live animals, this fun filled
program is the perfect educational summer activity. 2009 marks the 13th
summer for Awesome Animals and its popularity is still growing! For
Summer 2009 there will be five Awesome Animals and Advanced Awesome
Animals sections:
- Awesome Animals (grades preK-3)
- Advanced Awesome Animals (grades 3-6)
Both Awesome Animals and
Advanced Awesome Animals will meet at the same time. While some instruction
will involve both classes, for most instruction and activities the two
classes will divide and do separate activities with the instructors.
Awesome Animals:
The
Awesome Animals Summer Program is a great way for your kids to have
an educational summer. In Awesome Animals, your children will learn
about animals from the animals themselves! Each session your child will
be introduced to and allowed to interact with many different animals
(only the safe animals of course). The instructors introduce the animals
through anatomy, defense mechanisms, diet, habitat, and social behavior.
The students complete worksheets and projects each day and even assemble
a complete Animal Information Notebook with information they have learned
in the program. There is even snack time where students learn to eat
like frogs or rabbits. On the last day of class, each child will get
a pet of their own, a betta fish (aka Siamese Fighting Fish). Students
will receive their fish, a small tank, and all the supplies they will
need to take care of their new friend. The goal of the program is to
teach children just how wonderful animals are and how important it is
to treat them with respect and protect their natural habitats.
Advanced Awesome Animals:
Advanced
Awesome Animals is the class for aspiring veterinarians, biologists,
zookeepers, or simply kids that want to learn more than just the basics
about animals. Just like the regular Awesome Animals class we use live
animals to learn from. However, in this class, children learn about
environmental protection, zoo exhibit design, beginning animal medical
care, local wildlife, animal training techniques, and much more. Students
in this class will also assemble a notebook of information they learned.
This class even includes and an optional Sunday field trip to a local
pet store for a behind the scenes look at how pet stores work. On the
last day of class, each child will get a pet of their own, a betta fish
(aka Siamese Fighting Fish). Students will receive their fish, a small
tank, and all the supplies they will need to take care of their new
friend. This is the perfect class from Awesome Animal Alumni.
Other information about
both classes:
Students from all
classes and their families are invited to a special night time presentation
and animal show on Wednesday, July 29th. This presentation is always
a hit and there is sure to be some fun animals in attendance as well.
During this presentation we will learn about the local wildlife and
Animal Encounter Safety (like what to do when you encounter a bear or
mountain lion).
Every
year, many of our students are return students taking the class for the second,
third, or even forth time. This is because every year we change and add to the
program. With new activities, animals, and topics, its no wonder people keep
coming back.
The animals used
for the classes vary from year to year and even session to session,
as many of them are ordered specifically for Awesome Animals. No less
then 20 different species of animals are shown. For more information
see the Animals of Awesome Animals Page.
This years list looks very fun so far and we are very excited to teach
with these animals.
